Gabriel’s Research Project: Aladdin

Song from Aladdin movie – A Whole New World

Lyrically, “A Whole New World” describes Aladdin showing the confined princess a life of freedom and the pair’s acknowledgment of their love for each other while riding on a magic carpet. Based on the research information, the song earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 65th Academy Awards.  “A Whole New World” also won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year at the 36th Annual Grammy Awards.

I like the melody of this popular song and the moment that Aladdin (Mena Massoud) and Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott) sat on a magic carpet flying above the beautiful scenery places, such as rivers, hills and waterfalls.

March 24th: Summer Olympics and Paralympics postponed until 2021

Two days ago, the following article came out;

https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/canada-first-out-of-blocks-to-declare-our-athletes-won-t-go-to-tokyo-olympics-this-year-1.4863816

which explains how Canada was the first country to pull all of its athletes out of the 2020 Tokyo, Japan summer Olympic and Paralympic games. This was notable, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had recently said that it would take four weeks to make a decision on whether or not the games would be postponed.

Soon after Justin Trudeau declared that our athletes would not be participating in the games, Japan and the IOC made a statement that the Olympics and Paralympics will be postponed until the summer of 2021. You can read the article here:

https://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/52020134

What do you think of Canada’s decision to be the first country to withdraw all athletes from the games? What impact did this have on other countries? Do you think that this influenced Japan and the IOC to postpone the games until 2021? Please comment below or send me an email with your response!

Movie Suggestions:

To continue with our topic of music, which is something that can brighten all of our days right now, I thought we could watch musicals and/or music documentaries during our time at home. On Netflix, there are many musicals including Mamma Mia, The Greatest Showman, Pitch Perfect 3 and La La Land. There are also many music documentaries such as; Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, Katy Perry: The Movie Part of Me, Clive Davis: the Soundtrack of our Lives, and Taylor Swift: Miss Americana. These are just examples, but if you do watch any musical or music documentary, let me know which one you watch and comment on what you find fascinating about it.

March 23rd: Let's Connect!

Hey everyone!

Today we will have our Skype call at 1pm, and a lot of what we will be talking about will also be posted here, on the blog.

In the News:

To learn about what’s happening on a global scale, I have found the BBC to cover the most on the Coronavirus, and there are many articles about what is happening in different countries.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-51506729

This link above explains why everyone across the globe should be self-isolating and social distancing and how to do it. When we think about it as a global problem it helps to remind us that we are not alone in this!

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51915723

This link above talks about how Canadians were some of the first to start a “caremongering” trend, which means that through social media, Canadians began reaching out to their communities to offer help very early on in the quarantine period. Reminds us how lucky we are to live in Canada, and to have a supportive network within our communities.

If you found one of these articles to be interesting, leave a comment about it below!

If you have any articles that you would like to share with the class, email me the links or leave them in the comment section below so that everyone can see!

Research Project:

A research topic that I would like for everyone to start on is to choose a musician or a band, one that we have not talked about yet, and present them in a document which will be posted on the Blog. For instance, we have talked about The Beatles in class, and we learned about where they were from, when they were formed, songs that they wrote, famous performances that they made, when they broke up and what each member did in their solo career. You can provide as much information about the musician or band as you want, and you can also find videos that you want to share on Youtube. I will be making an individual post for everyone on the Blog, so that we can all comment on each other’s research. If you are not sure what band you want to do your research on, let me know and I can give you some suggestions. I would also like for you to look at the lyrics of their songs, and find a lyric that is meaningful to you. We will use the lyric you choose for the title of everyone’s projects.

Watch This:

Some resources that I have found entertaining during this time at home include youtube videos made by CHOIR! CHOIR! CHOIR! They are two guys from Toronto who have started a sing-along choir, where they have groups of people from all over North America come to a venue and practice one song and then eventually record the song and put it in a youtube video. The videos of the performances are very entertaining, and the songs that they perform are ones that everyone knows and loves. I have included some videos of theirs, along with their youtube channel to watch more if you enjoy! I believe they are also live-streaming some performances during the quarantine, so I will let you know when they plan to do that! Let me know what you think of them by sending me an email or leaving a comment on this post!

Video: Check this out!

So, Gal Gadot (aka Wonder Woman) led this cover of several celebrities singing Imagine by John Lennon because of the Coronavirus quarantine. The media response has been mixed on this, as some people are criticizing her for not recognizing herself as a wealthy celebrity who does not have to struggle through this time. What are your thoughts? Do you think that this was a positive message, or do you think that she should be criticized? Comment below!

March 20th: Let's get started!

Hello everyone!

I will be posting all class activities on this section of the website. Please check the blog regularly to see new posts and keep active in the Communication Enrichment Class.

I had sent an email regarding a journal prompt that I would like for everyone to respond to, and that is; what is one of your favourite songs, and why is it meaningful to you? Please send me your responses either via email or in a comment on this post.

I know that this time spent at home may be challenging, so I would like for all of us to begin practicing mindfulness and make it a part of our daily routine. Being mindful means to be fully present in the current moment. By practicing mindfulness, people have higher levels of focus and happiness, and decreased levels of stress and anxiety. One very simple way to begin our practice is by taking three deep breaths when we are feeling overwhelmed, sad or stressed. This is something that we can start to do during this time of isolation, and I would love to hear your thoughts on mindfulness, as well as your feedback on this practice. Send me emails or leave comments on this post!

An activity that I have started to do in my time of isolation is looking through old photos. This has been really fun as it has brought back many memories, and I have started to collect photos and put them in photo albums. I am going to start a scrapbook soon using some of my favourites. I highly recommend doing this, and if there are any photos you would like to share with me or the class send me a picture of them!

I know that it’s unfortunate that we can’t hold our class in person anymore, but I am excited to start using this online platform to keep connected with all of you. The more you comment on posts or email me your ideas and responses, the more we will all feel less isolated. That being said, let’s get started! 🙂
