April 7th: Aesop’s Fables

Interesting Facts about Aesop | LoveToKnow

Aesop was an ancient Greek writer who lived in the 6th century BC, in Athens, Greece. It is thought by many that he was a slave, and he was also a storyteller. The collection of short stories he created are referred to as Aesop’s Fables. These fables are often very short in length, but they carry lessons that are applicable to everyday life.

Gretchen Rubin

The Tortoise and The Hare is an example of one of his stories, and it is commonly known because of its significant moral. The phrase; “slow and steady wins the race,” is the message of the fable, and this is seen when the slow tortoise is able to beat the fast hare. The tortoise persevered, even when the odds were not in his favour, and managed to come out on top. The hare was over-confident, which allowed him to feel that he was safe to take a nap during the race, and this made him lose to the tortoise. The moral that can be taken from this fable is that success takes perseverance, and it also often takes time. The tortoise maintained a slow and steady pace the whole time, and he never gave up on the race. Another lesson is that the hare was not able to gain success by acting over-confidently and carelessly.

The Goose with the Golden Eggs

Another well known fable by Aesop is The Goose and The Golden Egg. In this fable, a Countryman owns a Goose that lays a golden egg once a day. This provides him with a small amount of wealth each day, but one day he decides to kill the goose and cut it open in order to get all of its golden eggs so that he can get rich faster. When he kills the goose, the Countryman realizes that there are no golden eggs inside, and the goose is now dead. Here is the link to read the fable: http://www.read.gov/aesop/091.html

This is another example of a strong moral, this time about greed. The Countryman became very impatient to get rich and he was ungrateful for the goose that was providing him wealth. By killing the goose, and therefore his source of wealth, he ended up with nothing.

Another fable by Aesop is The Boy Who Cried Wolf. The link to read it is here: http://read.gov/aesop/043.html. This story conveys the message that people who lie are not trusted, even when they do tell the truth.

Creative Writing Assignment #1:

Similar to the style and length of Aesop’s fables, write your own short story that contains a strong moral. Choose a moral (lesson) that you would like to convey in your story, and write your story using using one to two main characters, a simple setting, plot, conflict and resolution.

April 6th: Storytelling

For as long as people have gathered in groups and for as long as they have had a spoken language, they have told stories.  Long before they developed methods of writing and reading, they have used stories to learn about their history, to teach life lessons, to develop a culture, to understand better who they were.  In fact, before people had a spoken language, they used art drawn on the walls of caves to tell their stories.  Before books, newspapers, radio, television and computers, storytelling was the glue that held people together.  In fact, the native people who lived thousands of years ago, believed that people were not fully human until they began telling stories.

Storytelling is about communicating, sharing, teaching, entertaining.  We tell each other stories every day.  When you tell about your day, tell a joke or tell about a movie or play you saw, you are storytelling.

Both storytelling and listening to stories exercises our imagination, improves our listening and communication skills in a fun, interesting way and naturally sparks discussion, the forming of ideas and the exchange of ideas.

What are the elements that make up a story? What is the moral of a story?

To answer these questions, we can look at the fable of The Tortoise and The Hare by Aesop, an ancient Greek storyteller. Here is an animated cartoon video of the fable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeZe2qPLPh0

Jean-Luc’s Music Genre Project: Folklore

Folklore generally addresses the way of life or history of a culture, community
or a people. My family comes from Newfoundland, an island in the Atlantic off
the east coast of Canada. The folklore in Newfoundland is very similar to the
one in parts of Ireland and England from where settlers came over the past two
or three hundred years.

The way of life on the island has a lot to do with the sea. It is not surprising
to have a lot of the folklore music focusing on fishing and fishermen. A lot of
songs are ballads passed down through generations. My favourites are Rant and
Roar, l’s the B’y’ and Luke’s Boat.Instruments are very traditional like the
violins, the accordions, also called the squeeze boxes, and the spoons.

A more recent band, the Great Big Sea (Alan Doyle), active from 1993 to 2013,
plays them for you.

March 30th: Final Music Project

Hey everyone!

This week will be our last week focusing on Music, and so we are going to finish the topic by doing a final project and a quiz.

The final project is about choosing a genre of music, and doing research on that genre. I want everyone to talk about where, how and when the genre of music originated, artists who write and perform songs in the genre, what makes the genre unique, and anything else that you feel is relevant to share.

I would like for everyone to choose a different genre of music, and some examples are below:

  • Rock
  • Pop
  • Jazz
  • Hip Hop
  • Classical
  • Country
  • Rhythm and Blues
  • Reggae
  • Folk
  • Musical Theatre

Once you have chosen the genre you would like to research, let me know by email and I will put your name beside the music genre on this post.

When all the final projects are completed, we will be able to review and comment on one another’s projects. Information from the projects will also be used for the Final Quiz, which will be posted on Thursday, so make sure you read through everyone’s projects carefully!
