Victoria was born on May 24th, 1819, at Kensington Palace in London, England. She is thought to be one of the greatest monarchs of all time, and she reigned as Queen for 63 years. This was the longest that a British royal had been monarch in history.
Queen Victoria oversaw the Victorian Era, named appropriately after her, which included lots of growth and development in the United Kingdom and all over the world. For instance, railways were installed in England, and two years after she became Queen the first train left Paddington station in London. Construction of a more modern-day London, including the building of bridges and a sewage system also happened during her reign.

When she was born, she was fifth in line for the throne, after the four eldest sons of King George III. This meant that it was unlikely that she would ever been Queen.
Her father, Prince Edward died when she was only 1 year old, and her mother, was thought to be very controlling of Victoria, and kept her isolated from the outside world. Therefore, her childhood was very lonely, and she would write about this in her journal.

On June 20, 1837, Victoria was told that her uncle, King William IV had died. This meant that she was to succeed him, and she became the Queen of England less than a month after her 18th birthday.
From her diary:
“I was awoke at 6 o’clock by Mamma, who told me the Archbishop of Canterbury and Lord Conyngham were here and wished to see me. I got out of bed and went into my sitting-room (only in my dressing gown) and alone, and saw them. Lord Conyngham then acquainted me that my poor Uncle, the King, was no more, and had expired at 12 minutes past 2 this morning, and consequently that I am Queen.”

Victoria’s Coronation took place on June 28, 1938, and over 400, 000 visitors came into London for the celebrations. Queen Victoria became the first monarch to take residence at Buckingham Palace in London.

Although Victoria was now Queen, because she was unmarried she had to live with her mother. She did not get along well with her mother, and so she consigned her mother to live in a remote apartment in Buckingham Palace, and rarely visited her. She was advised that she no longer had to live her mother once she got married.

On February 10, 1840, Queen Victoria married Prince Albert. Albert was educated and part of the royal family, and he was the Queen’s first cousin. They had a loving relationship, which was admired by the British people. Prince Albert eventually became an important adviser to the Queen, and played a role in helping to smooth the relationship between the Queen and her mother, who was evicted from Buckingham Palace.
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had nine children over seventeen years. In March 1861, the Queen’s mother died, and after reading her mother’s papers, she realized her mother had loved her all along. This made Victoria very upset, and she went into mourning. Her husband, Prince Albert, took on her responsibilities during this time, but by the beginning of December of the same year he became very ill. Prince Albert died on December 14, 1861, at the age of 42, from typhoid fever.
Queen Victoria was devastated by the loss of Prince Albert, and she remained in mourning for the rest of her life. She wore black for the rest of her life, and made few public appearances. She earned the nickname “The Widow of Windsor” because of this.

During her public appearances, Queen Victoria survived 6 assassination attempts. Each attempt that she survived increased her popularity with the public, and she responded, “It is worth being shot at, to see how much one is loved.”

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert strategically planned their children’s marriages, and arranged for them to marry royals from different European countries. This expanded their family ties to several countries, and British heritage continues to be involved in other royal families.
In her final years, Queen Victoria’s closest friend was someone unexpected. Abdul Karim was an Indian attendant, who was sent to England to be an adviser to the Queen on how to address Indian princes who would frequent festivities that she hosted. He became her closest companion for 14 years, until her death, and on a daily basis he would give her Urdu lessons, educate her on Indian affairs, and introduce her to Indian food, including curry.

Queen Victoria showered Abdul with honours and gifts, and the rest of the royal family did not approve. When the Queen died in 1901, her family burned the letters that she sent Abdul, and they deported him back to India.
Queen Victoria died on January 22, 1901, at the age of 81. She had been ill for a long time, and suffered a stroke. She was succeeded by her son, Edward VII, who had the nickname Bertie. His reign marked the beginning of the Edwardian period.
