April 9: Solar and Lunar Eclipses in Canada

        • An eclipse occurs when two celestial bodies come together so that one blocks the sun’s light.
        • Eclipses can take place on different planets like Jupiter and Neptune, but on earth most eclipses are either solar or lunar eclipses.
        • During a solar eclipse, the moon is positioned between the earth and the sun. This casts a shadow on one portion of the earth.
        • During a lunar eclipse the opposite occurs. The earth blocks the sun’s light from reaching the moon.
        • You can watch a lunar eclipse just with your eyes.
        • However, if you look directly at the sun during a solar eclipse it can cause permanent eye damage. It is important to use proper eye protection to safely observe a solar eclipse.

        Solar Eclipse

        • Solar eclipses are the most anticipated astronomical events.
        • During a solar eclipse, the moon is between the earth and the sun. It casts a shadow across part of the earth.
        • Solar eclipses only occur when the moon is in the new moon phase and at one of its two orbital nodes.
        • This type of eclipse can cast different types of shadows. The first one is called the Umbral shadow. This is the shadow’s dark centre from which the sun is Not visible.
        • The Penumbral shadow is the weaker outer part of the shadow. This time the sun is only partially blocked.
        • The Antumbral shadow is like the Penumbra shadow.
        • But this time the sun appears larger than the moon. This is seen when the moon covers the sun.
        • There are four types of solar eclipses. They are total, partial, annual or and hybrid eclipses.

        Total solar eclipse

        • Total solar eclipses happen when the moon’s Amaral shadow moves across the earth.
        • For a total solar eclipse to happen the moon must be in the new moon phase and close enough to earth to cover the sun completely.
        • During a total solar eclipse, the part of the earth that is fully shaded by the moon is known as the path of totality.
        • These shadows are typically between 100 and 115 km wide and any given location along the path of totality can experience a total eclipse for 2 to 3 minutes.
        • While within the path of totality people watching will be able to see the sun around the moon’s edges.
        • Total solar eclipses are the rarest types of eclipses. For example the last time one happened it passed over Québec and it was in 1972. After the 2024 eclipse, the next total solar eclipse will take place over Québec in the year 2106.

        Did You Know?

On March 14, 2024, Canada Post made a new commemorative stamp to celebrate the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. This solar eclipse’s path of totality will be over some of the most populated cities of Mexico, the United States and Canada.

        Partial Solar Eclipse

        • These eclipses happen when the sun, moon and earth are Not perfectly aligned.
        • This causes the moon to cover part of the sun, and it stops some of the sun’s rays from reaching the earth.
        • Because of this the moons penumbral shadow moves across the earth while the umbral shadow completely misses the earth.

        Annular Solar Eclipse

        • Annular solar eclipses look like total solar eclipses. These eclipses occur when the moon is farther away from the earth and cannot completely block out the sun even, when it is passing directly in front of the sun.
        • This results in a ring of sunlight remaining visible during the eclipse.
        • The moons antumbral shadow moves across the earth, but the moon is too far from the earth to cover the sun completely.

        Hybrid Solar Eclipse

        • Hybrid solar eclipses are sometimes known as annular total eclipses. During this type of eclipse, the moon’s umbral and antumbral shadows move across the earth. This makes the eclipse appear to be an annualar or total eclipse depending on the different locations along its path.

        Lunar Eclipses

        • Lunar eclipses are more common than solar eclipses.
        • They happen when the earth is in between the sun and the moon.
        • The earth blocks the moon from receiving light from the sun. Because the moon often reflects much of the sunlight from the sun back to the earth, lunar eclipses are often characterized by the moon appearing red in the sky.
        • This is because the only light reaching the moon during a lunar eclipse is the sunlight that is passing through the earth’s atmosphere.
        • The earth’s atmosphere tends to scatter the sunlight, allowing red light which has a longer wavelength to reach the moon and it is reflected towards the earth.

        Total Lunar Eclipse

        • Total lunar eclipses happen when the earth is positioned in between the sun and the moon. This completely blocks direct sunlight from reaching the moon.

        Partial Lunar Eclipse

        • partial lunar eclipse, like partial solar eclipses, happen when the alignment between the sun, earth and moon is not exact. This results in some direct sunlight continuing to reach the moon.

        Did you know?

French missionaries recorded sightings of eclipses over Canada as far back as 1618. Jesuit missionaries recorded in eclipse in 1632.

        Hazards

        • Looking directly at the sun during a solar eclipse and cause partial or complete loss of eyesight. It is very important to wear appropriate eye protection while observing an eclipse. Using sunglasses is not enough protection. Solar eclipse viewing equipment that meets the international standard are the only way to protect your eyes. Even camera and phone lenses can be damaged by solar eclipses.

I thought we could end class by seeing what animals might do during an eclipse.

Here’s a funny video that describes April fools.

Here Are 10 Interesting Facts about April Fools’ Day

        1. It’s origins are covered in mystery: the exact origins of April Fools’ Day remain unknown, there are various theories and historical references tracing back in history. One popular theory suggests that it dates back to the 16th century when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. This moved to New Year’s Day from April 1 to January 1. Those who continue to celebrate New Year’s in April were labelled as fools and became the targets of jokes and pranks.
        2. It’s a global celebration: April Fools’ Day is not limited to one country or culture. It is observed worldwide but has different variations in customs and traditions. Countries across Europe, North America, Asia and beyond participate in the fun filled festivities but each of them has its own unique twist on the theme of funny jokes and deceptions.

        3. Official recognition: April Fools’ Day is not a recognized holiday in most countries. However, it’s widely celebrated and embraced by people of all ages as a date for laughter and amusement. Many media outlets, companies and even governments participate in the festivities by sharing clever planks and humorous announcements.

        4. Historical pranks: throughout history, April Fools’ Day has been marked by elaborate and memorable pranks. One famous example is when the BBC’s 1957 broadcast of the documentary on the spaghetti harvest in Switzerland. It features footage of people harvesting noodles from trees. Many viewers were fooled because it was so realistic and called in to inquire about how they could grow their own spaghetti trees.

        5. Traditional symbols: common symbols associated with April Fools’ Day include the Jester or court fool. They are known for their playful antics and witty humour. Other symbols include the fish in countries like France and Italy where April 1 is referred to as “poisson d’avril” or “April fish”. In this tradition it involves pinning paper fish to unsuspecting victims backs as a prank.

        6. No foolproof immunity: on April Fools’ Day, no one is safe from being pranked or having a joke pulled on them, not even prominent figures, or institutions. Over the years, celebrities, politicians, and other major corporations have all been victims of clever hoaxes and practical jokes by pranksters looking to get attention and laughter.

        7. Pranks in the digital age: because of the rise of internet and social media usage, April Fools’ Day pranks have taken on new forms and reached a lot broader of an audience. Tech companies in particular have embraced the occasion by unveiling fake products, features, and announcements to entertain and engage more users.

        8. Cultural variations: the idea of April Fools’ Day is consistent across all different cultures, but there are notable differences in how it is celebrated. In some countries, pranks and jokes are restricted to the morning hours with the addition of saying “April fools” to reveal the end of the prank. In other places the festivities may last throughout the day or even extend into the evening.

        9. Legal implications: most April Fools’ Day pranks are harmless and meant to be fun, but there have been instances where jokes have gone too far resulting in legal consequences. In some cases, individuals or organizations have faced lawsuits or disciplinary actions for pranks that cause harm, damage, or undue stress to other people.

        10. Spirit of camaraderie: despite its playful nature, April Fools’ Day can remind us of all how important laughter is in our lives and not to take ourselves too seriously. It offers an opportunity for people to come together, share memories of funny moments and create lasting memories through the joy of sharing laughter.

Why Does April Fools end at 12 noon?

In the 1950s folklorists Iona and Peter Opie found that in the UK all April Fools’ Day joking ended at midday. However, there were countries around the world that don’t follow the same role or tradition. Unfortunately, there isn’t actually a reason why April Fools’ Day ends at 12 noon. It is only a British tradition that has been adapted over the years that says jokes are strictly not allowed to be played after 12 noon. If someone does play in prank after 12 PM in Britain, they are considered the “April fool.”

I thought we could watch a few April fools pranks played on celebrities.

Thank you for celebrating April Fools’ Day with me. I hope it spread some cheer!

        March 19: Dating and Relationships

        What Is Dating?

        • Dating is a way for two people to explore their feelings and see if they wanted to be in a long-term relationship. This stage is often marked with curiosity, hope, questioning, and sometimes uncertainty. The dating phase of a relationship can mean moving closer to a relationship with a person or going separate ways.

        Four Stages of Dating

        1. Initial Awkwardness
        2. This stage is full of excitement and uncertainty. You can feel very attracted to the other person but still felt awkward around them. This is usually because of the fact you are uncertain about each other’s feelings and don’t know very much about each other. You can sometimes feel self-conscious because you are trying to make a good impression on the other person.
        3. Attraction
        4. You may find yourself always looking in their direction and trying to find ways to connect with them, in person or through leaving messages and phone calls. In this stage it forces each individual to get past their nervousness and intentionally take steps towards each other.
        5. Uncertainty about the Future
        6. This stage of dating represents a lot of confusion because both partners have to individually work through their emotions and decide on the possibility of having a romantic future together.
        7. Intimate Partnership
        8. This is the last stage of dating. In this stage the couple is moving towards a committed relationship with each other. It is when you start to feel hopeful about having a future to gather in this stage of dating both partners tell each other their intimate feelings such as using the words “I love you”. This is known as the beginnings of a relationship.

Here’s a great video on building great relationships.

What are the stages of a relationship?

Factors That Define Dating And Relationship Differences

        1. Mutual Feelings: Both people must make a choice whether or Not they are dating or in a relationship. When dating someone there is less responsibility to stay with the person. When you are in a relationship there is more responsibilities that you have towards each other so it’s important to make sure that both parties agree regarding the relationship status.
        2. No Looking Around: In this stage you stop looking around for other partners because you have found a perfect match for yourself. You are very happy with the person and each other.
        3. Enjoying Each Other’s Company: In this stage your very comfortable with someone and enjoy their company the most. You no longer try to get to know each other because you know each other pretty well and enjoy each other’s company.
        4. Making Plans Together: Before you used to like making plans with your family or your friends, however, when you’re in a relationship, you make most of your plans with that person. You even plan to go on trips together sometimes.
        5. Entering Their Social Life: Everyone has a social life. When dating, people tend to keep the person way from their social life because of the uncertainty of being together in the future. This changes when in a relationship. You include them in your social life and even introduce them to your friends and family.
        6. Go to Person: Who would you go to if you had a problem? Someone close to you and someone you trust. It is mostly our friends and family. However, when you’re in a relationship, your partner will be that person. Whenever you have trouble or need help their name comes to your mind along with the other people, like family members and friends.
        7. Trust: Trusting someone is one of the biggest things you can do for a person. In a relationship you have to decide whether you trust your partner or not. If you like to be with the person and would still like to learn to trust them, then you are still dating. However, if you trust the person and have no question in that trust you have now entered a committed relationship.
        8. Showing Your True Self: When you begin dating everyone wants to show their best side. Once you can show the side of yourself that your friends and family see, the good side as well as your innermost thoughts, feelings and fears you are in a relationship.
        9. Declaration of Love: When dating, you may tell each other that you like them very much. But in a relationship you are more emotionally connected to your partner and let them know you love them by your words and actions.
        10. Expectations: When you’re dating there is no real commitment to each other therefore, you don’t have to expect or demand things from the other person. When you’re in a relationship you expect your partner to show up when you need them or listen to your problems. You can tell your partner this and they can do the same because you are both committed to each other.
        11. The Use of The Word Us: When we are in a relationship we start to imagine activities and thoughts that we have in terms of a unit. This is why we start saying the word “we” automatically. When we’re dating we see ourselves as independent and we are not affected by plans the other person may have.
        12. The Title You Give Them: When you’re dating you refer to your partner differently when you introduce them. When you’re in a relationship you start to call them your partner, boyfriend, or girlfriend. This shows them the important position they have in your life.
        13. Duration: The difference between a relationship and dating is that a relationship is a long-term commitment. It indicates knowing and loving someone for a long period of time. The time indicates a serious commitment and investment into the other person.
        14. Stability: Relationships are usually characterized by the seriousness and stability the couple has committed to making things work between themselves. It involves maintaining peace and engagement between the couple. Dating is different because it can be unstable as you may still be looking at other romantic options with more than one person. It still involves questioning your feelings about a person.
        15. Walking Away: When dating a person, you don’t necessarily have to tell the other person that you don’t want to see them anymore. However, if you’re in a relationship with someone it is important to discuss things with your partner it even if you’re looking to break up with them. You are answerable to them if you decide to end the relationship because there are much deeper feelings involved.

The Difference Between Healthy and Unhealthy Love/Relationships

        Katie Hood Ted Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON4iy8hq2hM

Characteristics of Healthy & Unhealthy Relationships

Respect for both yourself and others is a key characteristic of healthy relationships. In contrast, in unhealthy relationships, one partner tries to exert control and power over the other physically, sexually, and/or emotionally.

        Healthy Relationships

Healthy relationships share certain characteristics that teens should be taught to expect. They include:

Mutual respect. Respect means that each person values who the other is and understands the other person’s boundaries.

Trust. Partners should place trust in each other and give each other the benefit of the doubt.

Honesty. Honesty builds trust and strengthens the relationship.

Compromise. In a dating relationship, each partner does not always get his or her way. Each should acknowledge different points of view and be willing to give and take.

Individuality. Neither partner should have to compromise who he/she is, and his/her identity should not be based on a partner’s. Each should continue seeing his or her friends and doing the things he/she loves. Each should be supportive of his/her partner wanting to pursue new hobbies or make new friends.

Good communication. Each partner should speak honestly and openly to avoid miscommunication. If one person needs to sort out his or her feelings first, the other partner should respect those wishes and wait until he or she is ready to talk.

Anger control. We all get angry, but how we express it can affect our relationships with others. Anger can be handled in healthy ways such as taking a deep breath, counting to ten, or talking it out.

Fighting fair. Everyone argues at some point, but those who are fair, stick to the subject, and avoid insults are more likely to come up with a possible solution. Partners should take a short break away from each other if the discussion gets too heated.

Problem solving. Dating partners can learn to solve problems and identify new solutions by breaking a problem into small parts or by talking through the situation.

Understanding. Each partner should take time to understand what the other might be feeling.

Self-confidence. When dating partners have confidence in themselves, it can help their relationships with others. It shows that they are calm and comfortable enough to allow others to express their opinions without forcing their own opinions on them.

Being a role model. By embodying what respect means, partners can inspire each other, friends, and family to also behave in a respectful way.

Healthy sexual relationship. Dating partners engage in a sexual relationship that both are comfortable with, and neither partner feels pressured or forced to engage in sexual activity that is outside his or her comfort zone or without consent.

        Unhealthy Relationships

Unhealthy relationships are marked by characteristics such as disrespect and control. It is important for youth to be able to recognize signs of unhealthy relationships before they escalate. Some characteristics of unhealthy relationships include:

Control. One dating partner makes all the decisions and tells the other what to do, what to wear, or who to spend time with. He or she is unreasonably jealous, and/or tries to isolate the other partner from his or her friends and family.

Hostility. One dating partner picks a fight with or antagonizes the other dating partner. This may lead to one dating partner changing his or her behavior in order to avoid upsetting the other.

Dishonesty. One dating partner lies to or keeps information from the other. One dating partner steals from the other.

Disrespect. One dating partner makes fun of the opinions and interests of the other partner or destroys something that belongs to the partner.

Dependence. One dating partner feels that he or she “cannot live without” the other. He or she may threaten to do something drastic if the relationship ends.

Intimidation. One dating partner tries to control aspects of the other’s life by making the other partner fearful or timid. One dating partner may attempt to keep his or her partner from friends and family or threaten violence or a break-up.

Physical violence. One partner uses force to get his or her way (such as hitting, slapping, grabbing, or shoving).

Sexual violence. One dating partner pressures or forces the other into sexual activity against his or her will or without consent.

        March 7: Sex & Disability

        Andrew Gurza, Queer Disability Advocate
        • Sexuality is a natural and integral part of being human. Disability shouldn’t be a barrier to experiencing pleasure, intimacy, and connection.
        • Everyone has the right to explore and express their sexuality in ways that are safe, consensual, and fulfilling.

So, why is sex with disabled people seen as a taboo?

        • Disabled people often encounter social and cultural barriers that impact their sexual expression.
        • Stigma, stereotypes, and misconceptions about disability and sexuality can contribute to feelings of shame and isolation.
        • These videos explore these topics and how disability advocates are working to challenge these attitudes and promote greater awareness, acceptance, and inclusivity around disability and sexuality.
        • We talked about this couple in our week on YouTubers celebrating their disabilities, and one way that they address misunderstanding is by doing Q&A videos like this one:
        • We also discussed this couple’s YouTube videos. Both couples have much longer videos on how they have sex and approach physical intimacy. They’re too long for us to show in class, but I’ll put at the bottom of this lesson.
        • These are interabled couples, but of course, disabled people can be each other’s partners! This is a German couple, but there are English translations!

        Self-Pleasure

        • As Andrew said in his video, sexual pleasure doesn’t need to be dependent on another person. People can give it to themselves with sex toys and assistive devices. Let’s explore some other options besides the one that he invented.
        • Let’s hear from another person about how she approaches sex to accommodate her physical disabilities, as well as how she finds people to have sex with while being upfront and honest about her needs.
        • For some individuals with disabilities, hiring a sex worker may be a viable option for exploring their sexuality and fulfilling their sexual needs.
        • Sex workers who are trained in working with clients with disabilities can provide a safe and nonjudgmental environment for sexual exploration and intimacy.
        • However, it’s important for individuals to research and choose sex workers who are reputable, professional, and experienced in working with clients with disabilities.

        To Sum Up…

        • Ultimately, the right to sexual expression and intimacy is a fundamental aspect of human rights, and individuals with disabilities deserve the opportunity to explore and enjoy their sexuality in a safe and fulfilling manner.
        • By addressing barriers and promoting awareness and acceptance, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive society where all individuals have the freedom to express their sexuality and pursue intimate relationships on their own terms.
